New Korean regional carrier SUM Air has placed an order for four ATR 72-600 turboprops, with options for four additional aircraft, marking a key step in its expansion strategy. Deliveries are scheduled from 2028.
The airline, which began operations in March 2026, aims to improve connectivity across underserved regions in South Korea, including island airports and short-haul international routes to Japan and China. The ATR 72-600’s short-runway capabilities and fuel efficiency make it well suited to these operations.
SUM Air plans to develop a hub-and-spoke network starting with routes such as Gimpo–Sacheon, with future expansion to island destinations including Ulleungdo, Baengnyeongdo, and Heuksando.
The order underscores ATR’s confidence in the Korean regional aviation market, where it forecasts demand for 25–30 turboprops in the coming years. It also strengthens the partnership between the manufacturer and the newly established airline, supporting sustainable and cost-effective regional air services.
