A Fokker 50 operated by Somali carrier StarSky, registration 6O-YAS, suffered substantial damage after overrunning the runway at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport, Somalia.
The aircraft had departed Mogadishu for Galkayo, Puntland, with 55 people on board. Shortly after take-off, while climbing out, the crew encountered a technical problem and decided to return to Mogadishu for an emergency landing.
According to Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the aircraft landed safely but during the roll-out the crew lost control. The turboprop veered off the runway, went down a cliff and came to rest at sea level on the beach.
Remarkably, no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. However, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.
An investigation into the incident has been opened.
Former VLM aircraft
The aircraft involved, a Fokker 50, was previously registered OO-VLX and operated by Belgian regional carrier VLM Airlines. The turboprop type, developed by Dutch manufacturer Fokker, remains in service with several operators worldwide, particularly in Africa, despite production having ended in the 1990s.
