STARLUX Airlines has taken delivery of its first specially painted aircraft, the Airbus A350-1000 STARLUX AIRSORAYAMA Silver, at Airbus’ delivery centre in Toulouse, France. Designed by renowned Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, the airline describes the aircraft as the world’s largest flying canvas and its first-ever special livery.
The aircraft features Sorayama’s signature liquid-metal aesthetic, combining a predominantly silver finish with gold accents. Developing the livery required a three-year collaboration between STARLUX, Airbus and coatings specialist Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co., which created a new multi-layer painting process capable of achieving the artist’s metallic effect while meeting aviation certification standards.
The project also resulted in the creation of two proprietary metallic colours—AIRSORAYAMA Silver and AIRSORAYAMA Gold—developed with Pantone and officially added to the Pantone Color System, marking the first metallic colours specifically engineered for use on commercial aircraft.
The delivery ceremony was attended by STARLUX Chairman K.W. Chang, CEO Glenn Chai, Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Lars Wagner and other industry executives. Chang personally piloted the aircraft on its ferry flight from Toulouse to Taiwan.
The AIRSORAYAMA collaboration extends beyond the aircraft’s exterior, with themed onboard amenities, a dedicated safety video and exclusive merchandise designed to give passengers a distinctive art-inspired travel experience.
