Spirit Airlines has reached an agreement with creditors to emerge from its second bankruptcy later this spring or early summer, avoiding liquidation but re-emerging as a significantly smaller airline.
The ultra-low-cost carrier, which had warned of “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue operating, will restructure its balance sheet by cutting total debt and lease obligations from USD 7.4 billion to USD 2.1 billion. The airline has already sold aircraft and airport gates, reduced staff, and plans further fleet simplification, including retiring higher-cost Airbus models and potentially rejecting additional A320neo aircraft.
Capacity will be sharply reduced: this summer, Spirit is scheduled to operate nearly 40% fewer flights and seats compared with summer 2024, before its bankruptcy filing.
Strategically, the airline will concentrate operations on core hubs such as Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Detroit and the New York area, trimming less profitable routes, including some Latin American services, and cutting off-peak weekday flying.
While maintaining its low-fare positioning, Spirit also plans to increase revenue through expanded premium seating, including a broader rollout of premium economy and potential expansion of its “Big Front Seat” product.
Spirit will remain independent under the restructuring plan. Previous takeover attempts—including a proposed merger with Frontier Airlines and a later deal with JetBlue Airways blocked by a federal judge in 2024—ultimately collapsed.
Despite its reduced scale, Spirit’s continued presence is seen as structurally important to the US market, as its low-fare model exerts downward pricing pressure on larger legacy airlines.
