Spirit Airlines has ceased operations with immediate effect, cancelling all flights and launching an “orderly wind-down,” leaving thousands of passengers stranded and around 17,000 employees impacted.
The airline said it ran out of funding after a sharp rise in fuel costs—linked to geopolitical tensions, including the Iran conflict—further weakened an already fragile financial position. Efforts to secure additional liquidity, including discussions with the U.S. government and creditors, ultimately failed.
Passengers were instructed not to go to airports, with check-in desks left unattended and minimal on-site assistance available. Refunds will be processed automatically for direct bookings, but additional costs such as replacement flights or accommodation will not be reimbursed unless covered by insurance.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has coordinated support measures with major carriers, including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines. These include capped fares, “rescue” tickets, and efforts to help displaced employees find new roles.
Spirit’s collapse follows years of financial instability, failed merger attempts—notably with JetBlue—and two bankruptcy filings since 2024. Its shutdown marks the first liquidation of a major U.S. airline since the 2008 financial crisis and is expected to reduce competition in the low-cost segment, potentially driving up fares.
