Spirit Airlines is preparing to cease operations after running out of cash, with efforts to secure funding or a government-backed rescue reportedly stalling.
The airline has struggled to recover demand following the pandemic, and its financial position has been further weakened by soaring jet fuel prices—exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, including the war in Iran. ??????ations with creditors have failed to produce a viable solution, raising the prospect of liquidation, which would mark the first major U.S. airline collapse since the 2008 financial crisis.
The Trump administration has considered intervention, including a potential $500 million loan or even a government buyout, but no deal has been finalised. Meanwhile, rival low-cost carriers reportedly proposed a $2.5 billion support package, citing industry-wide pressure from fuel costs.
Spirit’s challenges predate the current crisis. In 2024, a federal judge blocked its planned $3.8 billion merger with JetBlue on antitrust grounds, removing a potential lifeline. Political figures have since argued that the decision weakened the airline’s financial outlook.
If Spirit collapses, analysts warn it could reduce competition in the U.S. airline market—dominated by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines—and lead to higher fares for consumers. The airline, founded in 1983, continues to operate for now while discussions remain ongoing.
