Severe storms, including hail and strong winds, led to nearly 400 flight cancellations at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Saturday, with Delta Air Lines accounting for 380 of them. Around 100 Delta aircraft were inspected for hail damage, with most returned to service by Saturday.
The storms also forced over 90 flight diversions across the U.S. Southeast and prompted a temporary evacuation of the airport’s air traffic control tower on Friday evening. Though briefly evacuated due to strong winds, essential staff remained to manage air traffic.
Delta continues working to restore normal operations and thanked passengers for their patience, as delays and disruptions may still occur. The airline cited microburst winds and quarter-inch hail as factors behind the disruptions.
The Mammoth storm that affected Atlanta yesterday evening, caused a massive aviation crisis, as hundreds of flights were canceled, delayed or diverted.
