SAS has announced the largest investment in its history with an order for up to 40 Airbus widebody aircraft, a move that underpins the Scandinavian carrier’s long-term growth strategy following its financial restructuring.

The order, valued at more than DKK 100 billion (EUR 13 billion) at list prices, includes 18 Airbus A330-900neo and several A330-300 aircraft. SAS said the actual purchase price is lower after customary discounts.

Chief Executive Anko van der Werff described the deal as a clear vote of confidence in the airline’s future. The announcement follows last year’s order for 45 Embraer regional aircraft and comes around two years after SAS emerged from US Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with Air France-KLM becoming its largest shareholder.

SAS plans to increase passenger numbers by 68% by 2030 and recruit around 2,100 additional employees as it expands its network and fleet.

The airline also released an economic impact study estimating that its planned growth, together with the expansion of Copenhagen Airport, could create 25,000 new jobs and contribute DKK 25 billion to Denmark’s GDP by 2030.

The announcement follows a strong financial performance in 2025, with SAS reporting a 7% increase in revenue to nearly DKK 34 billion and a 12% rise in passenger numbers.
