SAS Scandinavian Airlines has named its newest Airbus A350-900 “Frederik Viking” in honour of Frederik X during a ceremony at Copenhagen Airport as the airline marks its 80th anniversary year.
King Frederik X attended the naming ceremony on 18 May, after which the aircraft operated flight SK987 from Copenhagen to Seoul.
SAS CEO Anko van der Werff said the naming reflects both Denmark’s modern international outlook and the airline’s long-standing Scandinavian heritage. SAS aircraft traditionally carry Viking-inspired names, symbolising exploration and regional identity.
The A350 is now the flagship aircraft of SAS’s long-haul fleet and operates intercontinental services from Copenhagen to destinations in North America and Asia. The aircraft also forms part of the airline’s wider fleet renewal programme aimed at improving efficiency, passenger comfort and environmental performance.
According to SAS, the Airbus A350 offers:
The aircraft is also certified to operate with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blends, supporting the airline’s long-term emissions reduction strategy.
Founded in 1946, SAS connects Denmark, Norway and Sweden through a shared Scandinavian aviation network and continues to position Copenhagen as its primary long-haul hub.
