A SAS flight from Copenhagen to Vilnius returned to its departure airport on Saturday morning, 3 October, after a suspected drone sighting prompted a temporary closure of the Lithuanian airport. The disruption affected 39 passengers.
Fighter jets were scrambled and residents in the affected area were advised to seek shelter. Lithuania’s crisis management chief, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, said reports from members of the public about a possible airborne object heading towards Jonava remained unconfirmed.
The alert was subsequently lifted and Vilnius Airport reopened shortly before 10:00, after a closure lasting less than an hour. SAS said it was contacting affected passengers and examining alternative routes to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible.
