British Ryanair striking pilots: “Grounded No More”

The storm had started in the skies but ended in the courtroom.

Captain Laura Singh remembered the summer of 2019 not for the flights she flew but for the stand she and her fellow pilots took. Long hours, low pay progression, and deteriorating conditions had pushed them to strike—a legal action, hard-won and carefully planned. But Ryanair’s retaliation was swift and silent. One by one, pilots who had walked out in solidarity saw their travel perks revoked. The message was clear: fall in line, or pay the price.

It took years, but BALPA—the British Airline Pilots’ Association—never let it go. Represented by the legal firm Farrer & Co., they fought to prove that Ryanair’s punishment wasn’t just petty. It was illegal. In January 2025, the Court of Appeal ruled in BALPA’s favour: what Ryanair had done was a breach of the Blacklisting Regulations. The right to strike was protected. The message was reversed.

Then came one final twist: Ryanair, unwilling to let the ruling stand, applied to the Supreme Court for an appeal.

This week, the highest court in the land said no.

For Laura, now a senior captain, the decision came with a quiet kind of justice. There were no roaring engines, no urgent cabin calls—just a simple statement that echoed louder than any jet: blacklisting for strike action is unlawful.

BALPA’s legal director, Zohra Francis, called it “a victory that should never have been necessary.” The legal team at Farrer & Co. called it a confirmation that the law stood with workers. And Laura? She called it hope.

Because somewhere, a new pilot facing unfair terms might now think twice—not about striking, but about believing they had no choice but to stay silent.

Today, the skies looked a little clearer.
