According to The Sunday Times of Malta, Ryanair’s holding company is in the process of setting up a new airline that will incorporate the 61 Ryanair routes to and from Malta. The new airline would be called Malta Air and would not compete with Air Malta.
Ryanair has also committed, during negotiations with the government, to launch several other new routes and to double its fleet in Malta to 10 planes.
These planes and a number of others in the Ryanair fleet will be registered on the Maltese register and fly with a Maltese AOC.
The low-cost airline will also be setting up hangar facilities for repair and maintenance operations in Malta. Altogether, Malta Air would employ 350 people within three years.
The contract signing is described as “imminent”, says The Sunday Times of Malta.
