Ryanair has announced changes to its family seating policy, bringing it more closely into line with standard practices adopted by other European airlines.
Under the revised policy, effective for bookings made from 25 June, families who choose not to reserve seats in advance will receive complimentary seat assignments after check-in, with parents and children still guaranteed to sit together at no additional cost. However, these free allocations are likely to be located towards the rear of the aircraft, as front cabin seats are typically sold first.
Families wishing to select specific seats, including preferred locations such as front rows, will continue to have the option of paying a seat reservation fee. Ryanair stressed that children will still be seated next to a parent or accompanying adult free of charge, with one paying adult able to reserve seats for up to four children on the same booking at no extra cost.
The airline said the changes were introduced to align its procedures with broader industry standards and regulatory expectations across Europe. Chief Executive Michael O’Leary criticised European regulators, particularly the UK’s competition authorities, arguing that the existing Ryanair policy was more consumer-friendly and transparent than those used by many rival airlines.
According to Ryanair, the policy adjustment will be revenue-neutral for the airline while preserving its commitment to offering low fares and ensuring that families travelling with children are seated together.
