Passengers travelling with Ryanair faced major disruption at Stockholm Arlanda Airport on Wednesday morning after a problem with the airline’s baggage check-in system caused long queues and widespread delays.
Many travellers, despite arriving hours before departure, were unable to check in their luggage in time and missed their flights. One Ryanair flight to Crete reportedly departed with many empty seats after numerous passengers were denied boarding because they arrived at the gate after it had closed.
Affected passengers described chaotic scenes in the baggage reclaim area and said they received little information, with some purchasing expensive replacement tickets costing tens of thousands of Swedish kronor. Ryanair told passengers they could arrange their own rebooking and later apply for reimbursement.
Airport operator Swedavia confirmed that the disruption was caused by a Ryanair check-in system issue and said there were no wider airport check-in problems. Ryanair later stated that affected passengers would be rebooked onto alternative flights.
