[Analysis] Ryanair massively cancelling flights for the coming six weeks

Last week Ryanair announced that it would cancel 40-50 flights daily for the next six weeks (to the end of October), this means that a total of 2000 flights will be cancelled. Passengers can request a refund or change of their cancelled flight for free. But according to Belgian consumer magazine Test Aankoop/Test Achat, passengers can also demand reimbursement of other travel arrangements like hotels and car rentals.

A serious reputation damage for the low-cost airline leaving behind many disgruntled passengers, and it comes at a very high cost: 2000 cancelled flights, with a load factor of 95% of 189 seats, at 250 € compensation per passenger, this means 89,775,000 euros. Ryanair said on its website that all cancellations will be treated with respect to EU261/2004.

Many horror stories have already made the headlines all over Europe: passengers blocked in a foreign country with no way to return home in time to resume work, businesspeople having to pay outrageous amounts to be on time at their meetings abroad, missed weddings and anniversaries, etc.

An additional reason for anger among travellers is that Ryanair announces the cancellations only a few hours in advance, by SMS or e-mail, preventing them to make alternative arrangements. Trying to discuss with Ryanair to find a solution is also a nightmare: the chatbox is saturated with waiting times of over one hour!

Furthermore, it appears that on Saturday, 16 September, first day of the wave of cancellations, Ryanair cancelled no less than 82 flights, a lot more than initially claimed. But still, Ryanair tries to minimise the impact by saying that less than 2% of the flights are affected by the cancellations; but that still represents 15,000 passengers for the sole first day.

No doubt that the legal department of Ryanair will be inundated with claims and that the “Always getting better” motto of Ryanair will be seriously dented…
