Royal Aeronautical Society marks 160 years at the forefront of global aerospace

Share

In 2026, the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) celebrates its 160th anniversary, marking more than a century and a half of advancing aerospace knowledge, professional excellence and innovation across the global aviation and space sectors.

Founded in 1866, the Society has brought together generations of engineers, aviators, researchers and industry leaders, playing a central role in shaping the evolution of flight. As part of the anniversary, the RAeS is also recognising the contribution of organisations and partners across the aerospace ecosystem that continue to drive progress and innovation.

Over its 160-year history, the Royal Aeronautical Society has been at the forefront of pioneering research and technical excellence, championing professional standards and accreditation, supporting education and lifelong learning, and connecting the global aerospace community through events, publications and knowledge-sharing. It has also led critical discussions on safety, sustainability and the future of flight.

A key feature of the anniversary programme is 160 Icons of Aerospace, a year-long social media series highlighting influential people, aircraft, technologies, milestones and future innovations that have shaped the sector. These icons will align with themed weeks and an accompanying events programme focusing on civil aviation, defence, sustainability, space and the people behind aerospace.

The anniversary serves both as a celebration of the Society’s legacy and a forward-looking statement of its continued role in supporting and shaping the future of global aerospace.
