In an extraordinary development, the Trump administration is preparing to accept a Boeing 747-8 VIP jet—dubbed a “flying palace”—from the royal family of Qatar. The ultra-luxurious widebody, reportedly valued at around $400 million, will serve as an interim Air Force One for President Trump until the end of his second term, after which it will transfer to the Trump Presidential Library Foundation.
This specific 747-8, believed to be about 13 years old, was previously configured to VVIP standards and toured by Trump earlier this year in West Palm Beach. It will be handed over to the U.S. Air Force and modified by L3Harris to meet “POTUS”-grade security and communications specs.
The move is unprecedented: never before has a foreign government gifted such a high-value aircraft to the U.S. for presidential use. Legal memoranda from the DOJ and White House Counsel conclude the arrangement doesn’t violate the Constitution’s emoluments clause or bribery statutes, since the aircraft is technically being donated to the government, not Trump personally.
Nevertheless, the gift raises substantial ethical issues, given the immense value of the plane and the fact that President Trump plans to use it after he leaves office.
The deal also reflects mounting frustration over delays in Boeing’s Air Force One replacement programme. The current 747-200-based VC-25As have been flying since 1990, and while Boeing was contracted to deliver replacements in 2018, the jets may not be ready until 2029, well after Trump’s presidency. Trump reportedly tasked Elon Musk to help expedite the process, but with limited success.
If finalised, this would mark the first use of a 747-8 as Air Force One and a remarkable stopgap solution to modernise the presidential fleet, via Gulf diplomacy.

This aircraft would not only be the longest passenger jet ever used as Air Force One but also a leap forward in comfort and efficiency, albeit via an unconventional acquisition.
I find it incredible that Qatar wants to gift Trump a VIP Boeing 747-8 to use as an interim Air Force One. The jet is luxurious, modern, and ready to fly, which might seem like a practical solution given the delays with the new presidential aircraft. But honestly, it raises a lot of red flags. Is it even legal for a former president to accept such a massive gift from a foreign government? What about the ethical implications or national security risks? Plus, converting the jet for presidential use would cost hundreds of millions more—so it’s not exactly “free.” To me, this feels more like a political stunt or image play than a serious, well-thought-out decision. It definitely leaves me questioning the real motives behind it.
