Converting Qatari 747 into Air Force One could cost more than $1 billion and take years, experts warn

Plans to convert a Qatari-owned Boeing 747 into a future Air Force One for U.S. President Donald Trump could cost over $1 billion, take several years, and burden U.S. taxpayers, aviation experts say. The 13-year-old jet, worth roughly $400 million, would require complete disassembly, extensive security retrofitting, and installation of classified defence systems, pushing the cost well beyond its value.

Experts highlight that the project might not be completed by 2029, when the jet is expected to be handed to Trump’s presidential library foundation. Key upgrades would include secure communications, missile defence, EMP shielding, and midair refuelling—a process described as “enormously time-consuming.”

Despite Boeing already working on two new Air Force One aircraft under a $5.3 billion programme facing delays and overruns, the Qatari 747 retrofit could represent a financial reprieve for Boeing, should it secure a new contract. Analysts, however, question the logic and cost-effectiveness of converting an older commercial jet, especially amid ongoing delays in the official VC-25B replacement programme.

The White House has yet to confirm the plan, and Qatari officials say the aircraft’s transfer is still under consideration.
