Qantas has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR in Hamburg, becoming the Asia-Pacific region’s launch operator for the long-range single-aisle aircraft. The jet is flying to Sydney with just one crew stop in Bangkok, highlighting its extended range capabilities.
Configured with 20 Business Class and 177 Economy seats, the aircraft will initially serve domestic Australian routes, with future potential for secondary Asian destinations. Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, it offers up to 4,700 nautical miles of range and 30% lower fuel consumption and emissions than older models.
Qantas Group has ordered 40 A321XLRs—28 for Qantas and 12 for Jetstar—part of a broader order including 128 Airbus single-aisle aircraft and 24 A350-1000s. The A321XLR can currently operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel, with Airbus aiming for 100% SAF capability by 2030.
