An Amazon Air Boeing 767 freighter crashed after apparently overrunning runway 30 at Miami International Airport on Sunday, with the aircraft coming to rest outside the airport perimeter and catching fire.

The aircraft was operating Amazon Air flight CSB7598 from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami when the accident occurred. Videos from the scene show the Boeing 767 beyond the runway environment, with a large plume of black smoke and flames visible around the aircraft.

The aircraft has been identified as Boeing 767-33AER(BDSF), registration N1997A. The 767 is operated by 21 Air for Amazon Air. Aviation records identify the aircraft as MSN 27310. Photographic records also show N1997A previously operating Amazon services from Miami under Atlas Air. This 767 was initially delivered from the factory to Sobelair as OO-SBY on 24 June 1994.

Initial reports described the aircraft as having gone off or overrun Runway 30, although the precise sequence of events remains to be established. Images from the scene indicate that the aircraft travelled beyond the runway and across a road before coming to rest.

Emergency services responded in large numbers, with firefighters tackling a fire involving the aircraft. The full extent of the damage has not yet been established.

Casualties being investigated

The number and condition of people involved in the accident has not yet been officially confirmed.

Unverified reports circulating on social media have referred to multiple casualties, but these figures have not been independently confirmed by Miami-Dade authorities, the FAA or the National Transportation Safety Board. Aviation24.be will update this article as soon as reliable casualty information becomes available.

The aircraft was carrying a two-person flight crew, according to the type of operation.

Miami International Airport experienced operational disruption following the accident, with emergency crews requiring access to the runway and surrounding areas.

The cause of the accident is currently unknown. Investigators will examine the aircraft’s approach and landing, weather conditions, runway surface and braking performance, as well as any possible technical or operational factors.

The FAA and NTSB are expected to investigate the accident.

The crash is particularly notable because the aircraft was operating for Amazon Air, whose US cargo network relies on aircraft operated by partner airlines. It also recalls the February 2019 crash of Atlas Air Flight 3591, another Boeing 767 freighter operating for Amazon, which crashed near Houston while flying from Miami. All three people aboard that aircraft were killed.

This is a developing story. Further information on the crew, possible ground casualties, the aircraft’s final approach and the cause of the accident is expected as authorities investigate.

UPDATE

At least five people are dead after an Amazon cargo aircraft overran the runway during a landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, striking multiple vehicles on a road surrounding the airport, officials said. Three are in critical condition and were taken to a trauma centre, while two others were taken to a local hospital.

Several victims were trapped in the vehicles that were hit by the plane and had to be extracted.
