Norwegian has confirmed it will exercise options for 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, expanding its current order to a total of 80 aircraft. The decision marks another step in the airline’s long-term fleet renewal strategy and underscores its ambitions for growth in the coming years.
The announcement builds on Norwegian’s agreement from May 2022, when the carrier placed an initial order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, with purchase rights for an additional 30. With the options now converted into firm commitments, deliveries are scheduled through to 2031, following an adjustment in timelines agreed with Boeing.
The new delivery schedule has been tailored to match the expiry of existing aircraft leases and anticipated market developments, ensuring Norwegian maintains a modern, fuel-efficient fleet without overextending capacity.
For passengers, the new aircraft are expected to deliver a quieter cabin experience and reduced environmental footprint. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 consumes significantly less fuel than earlier-generation models, supporting Norwegian’s drive to reduce operating costs while advancing its sustainability goals.
“This milestone aircraft order is on attractive terms and secures our fleet growth in a way that supports our planned growth and sustainability targets,” said Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian. “By exercising the option and adjusting the delivery profile, we maintain flexibility while reinforcing our commitment to operating one of the most modern and fuel-efficient fleets in Europe. These aircraft will not only lower emissions but also provide our customers with an even better travel experience. We are pleased to extend our solid long-term partnership with Boeing through this order.”
