Russia will begin direct charter flights between Moscow and North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, on July 27, according to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR).
The new route will be operated twice weekly by the Russian airline Nordwind, following approval from the country’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia. Nordwind reportedly sought the licence in June.
Currently, the only direct flights between the two nations are operated by North Korea’s Air Koryo, connecting Pyongyang with Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East. That service resumed in August 2023 after a Covid-era suspension.
The Moscow-Pyongyang connection marks a significant expansion in Russia-North Korea aviation ties, which have deepened alongside broader diplomatic and military cooperation. U.S. officials accuse Pyongyang of supplying Russia with weapons for use in Ukraine, an allegation both countries deny.
The flight announcement follows a string of high-level diplomatic exchanges, including President Vladimir Putin’s 2024 visit to Pyongyang, during which the two nations signed a mutual defence pact.
