Estonian airline Nordica will expand its activities at Groningen Airport Eelde in 2018 with two new routes to respectively Munich and Brussels. That was announced on Tuesday afternoon at Groningen airport, according to Dutch website Luchtvaartnieuws.
The flights, operated by a Bombardier CRJ700 aircraft, will start on 26 March 2018. Nordica has been flying twice a day from Eelde to Copenhagen since last year. To make the extra flights possible, the company will base one CRJ700 aircraft at Eelde. Munich will be connected daily and Brussels six times a week.
Next summer season, two daily flights are planned to Copenhagen from Monday to Friday, while on Saturday and Sunday one return trip will be flown. A total of 25 Nordica flights will depart from Eelde every week.
Groningen Airport Eelde is happy with the new connections to both Brussels and Munich airports, both of which are hubs of the Star Alliance. An airport spokesperson stated: “From these airports, you can easily transfer to, for example, Barcelona, Rome or Prague. Or to intercontinental destinations such as Miami, Beijing or Doha.”
Munich is a very important hub in the Lufthansa route network, whereas Brussels is home to Brussels Airlines, with an extensive route network within Europe and to Africa. Interconnections with various other large international airlines are also possible. “Thanks to the new connections, the entire world can be reached from Groningen Airport Eelde“, the airport reports.
With the expansion, a significant step forward is being made to complete future ambitions of Groningen Airport. The new routes are also good news after low-cost airline Wizz Air announced last week that it would stop the scheduled service to Gdansk after the winter.
It is striking that Groningen Airport Eelde is the only Dutch airport with hub connections besides Amsterdam Schiphol. Rotterdam The Hague Airport lost scheduled service to Munich earlier this year, while Eindhoven Airport is still looking to add a connection to a hub to its offer.
