A new Belgian investment holding, FLARE, was officially launched on Wednesday evening at the Melsbroek air base in Steenokkerzeel, on the eve of the Bedex defence exhibition.
The initiative aims to invest in key technologies, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, space, and the modernisation of ground and air equipment.
Based in Flanders, FLARE will focus on so-called dual-use technologies that can serve both civilian and military applications. The holding intends to respond to the growing demand for investments in defence, technology and strategic autonomy within Europe.
The launch took place during a networking event with representatives from the aerospace and defence sectors. The Belgian Ministry of Defence and the cabinet of the Flemish Minister-President were also present.
During the event, an overview of the Belgian and Flemish aerospace and defence market was presented by the international audit and advisory firm BDO. The event was organised in cooperation with BMT Aerospace and EURAMEC.
The launch comes as Belgium plans to significantly increase defence spending, with the federal government aiming to invest at least €11 billion in defence by 2030, including modernisation of equipment, technological innovation and stronger cooperation within NATO and the European Union.
