A Myanmar National Airlines aircraft was struck by kamikaze drones while boarding passengers at Myitkyina Airport on the evening of February 20, 2026, in what appears to be a rare and alarming attack on civilian aviation amid Myanmar’s ongoing conflict.
According to multiple local and regional sources, the aircraft — an ATR 72-600, registration XY-AMI — was preparing to operate flight UB662 from Myitkyina to Mandalay when it was hit at approximately 20:12 local time.
The turboprop reportedly sustained minor shrapnel damage to the nose, mid-fuselage and tail section, including tail lights. Open-source imagery from the scene shows visible damage to the rear fuselage, where at least one drone impact allegedly sparked a small fire.
No passengers or crew members were injured. Security forces evacuated those on board, secured the aircraft, and neutralised any remaining explosive threats, according to official statements.
