SWISS will reduce its wet-leased fleet from 26 aircraft to around 18 in summer 2027 as it restores more flying with its own aircraft and crews. Its cooperation with airBaltic will end with the conclusion of the winter 2026/27 timetable.
The airline said improving engine availability and cockpit staffing would allow it to operate additional Airbus A320 aircraft itself. Wet-lease partners had helped maintain schedules during shortages of Pratt & Whitney engines, additional training requirements and limited pilot resources.
Chief executive Jens Fehlinger said the reduction of up to eight externally operated aircraft depended on sufficient crews, suitable operating conditions and advance planning.
SWISS will concentrate its remaining wet-lease requirements primarily on Helvetic Airways, expanding its long-standing partnership to retain flexibility for seasonal demand and short-term operational needs.
The airline thanked airBaltic for its support during the engine-related disruption. The announcement did not specify how many airBaltic aircraft would be affected by the agreement’s expiry.
