Swiss International Air Lines will cancel 326 flights during the summer schedule due to a shortage of cockpit crew and ongoing operational challenges, the airline confirmed on Wednesday.
The cancellations represent around 0.4% of SWISS’s total flight programme, a notable improvement compared to last year, when approximately 1,400 flights (1.5%) were cut between April and October.
The airline is facing a shortfall of captains and first officers across multiple fleets, including Airbus A320/321 narrowbodies and long-haul A330 and A340 aircraft. The situation is further strained by:
Ongoing pilot retraining programmes for the incoming Airbus A350 fleet
Eleven aircraft grounded due to engine-related issues
Structural and technical bottlenecks impacting scheduling flexibility
As a result, SWISS is reducing frequencies on labour-intensive long-haul routes, including services to Chicago and Shanghai.
The carrier described the cancellations as a “last resort”, noting that training new cockpit crew takes several months and cannot be accelerated due to regulatory and contractual constraints.
In contrast to the pilot shortage, SWISS currently has an oversupply of cabin crew, with up to 300 excess flight attendants at certain times. To address this imbalance, the airline is offering voluntary resignation bonuses of up to CHF 15,000.
Bottom line: Despite improvement from 2025 disruption levels, SWISS continues to face structural staffing and fleet challenges, forcing targeted summer cancellations—particularly on long-haul routes—while longer-term workforce adjustments remain underway.
