SWISS has confirmed that the smoke incident aboard flight LX16 from Zurich to New York on 28 July 2026 was caused by a headphone charging case that became trapped inside a passenger seat and was damaged, leading it to overheat and emit smoke. The aircraft diverted safely to Bangor International Airport in Maine as a precaution.
A technical inspection found that the device was a commercially available headphone case incorporating a power bank function. Although the battery was relatively small, SWISS stressed that any damaged lithium battery can overheat and pose a serious fire risk, underlining the importance of strict onboard safety procedures.
The airline used the incident to remind passengers of its updated battery policy, introduced earlier this year. While passengers may still carry up to two power banks in their hand luggage, using or charging power banks during the flight is prohibited. Power banks must remain on the passenger, in the seat pocket or beneath the seat, and are not permitted in checked baggage or overhead lockers. The same restrictions apply to electronic cigarettes.
SWISS praised the crew of LX16 for responding exactly as trained. Following established emergency procedures for smoke of unknown origin, the pilots diverted to the nearest suitable airport, while the cabin crew managed the situation using specialised training and onboard equipment, including Lithium Safe Bags designed to safely contain overheating electronic devices.
The airline also sought to correct misinformation circulating after the event, stressing that there was no fire in the cockpit. Smoke was confined to the forward section of the Business Class cabin, and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) subsequently corrected an initial report that had incorrectly referred to a cockpit fire.
