A SWISS Airbus A330-300 operating from Zurich to Boston was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Dublin after smoke was detected on board, reportedly caused by a power bank. Flight LX52, operated by Airbus A330-300 HB-JHN, departed Zurich Airport at 18:11 on Sunday, August 9, bound for Boston Logan International Airport. During the flight, the crew became aware of smoke in the cabin and requested a priority landing in Dublin.
The aircraft, carrying 206 passengers, landed safely at Dublin Airport at 03:07 local time on Monday morning. The passengers were accommodated in a hotel overnight while the aircraft was inspected.
According to SWISS, the smoke was caused by a power bank. The airline has not disclosed further details about how the device began emitting smoke.
HB-JHN returned to Zurich on Monday, August 10, arriving back at its home airport later in the day.
Despite the incident, the aircraft is scheduled to return to service on Monday evening. HB-JHN is due to operate SWISS flight LX18 from Zurich to New York Newark, although the service is currently showing a delay of around four hours and 20 minutes.
