Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz

Lufthansa Group has celebrated its 100th anniversary with a major ceremony at Frankfurt Airport, officially opening its new conference and visitor centre, Hangar One.

The event brought together hundreds of guests from politics, business, and media, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who delivered the keynote address. He highlighted Lufthansa’s historical importance to Germany’s economy and its role in connecting global markets over the past century.

CEO Carsten Spohr described the airline’s evolution from its founding into a global aviation group employing around 110,000 people across multiple airlines and divisions. He emphasised the company’s continued focus on sustainable growth and international connectivity.

Supervisory Board Chairman Karl-Ludwig Kley underlined aviation’s role in driving economic growth and job creation, pointing to innovation, digitalisation, and international expansion as key priorities for the future.

The newly opened Hangar One is designed as both a collaboration space and a public-facing venue, showcasing Lufthansa’s history and future ambitions. Highlights include restored historic aircraft such as the Junkers Ju 52 and Lockheed Super Star, alongside exhibitions detailing the company’s development. The facility is expected to open to the public in early summer.

The anniversary celebrations also paid tribute to Lufthansa’s workforce, with more than 200 employees participating in a commemorative photo in front of an Airbus A350 in special anniversary livery—symbolising the people behind the airline’s century-long operations.
