Lufthansa has introduced its first retrofitted Airbus A380 featuring a completely redesigned Business Class, marking a major step in the airline’s premium cabin upgrade strategy.

The aircraft, registered D-AIMC and nicknamed “Mike-Charly,” entered service on April 23, operating flight LH452 from Munich to Los Angeles. It is the first of eight A380s set to undergo a comprehensive cabin modernisation programme.

The revamped upper-deck Business Class introduces 68 new seats designed to enhance comfort and privacy. Developed by Thompson, the seats offer direct aisle access for every passenger, a width of 58 cm, and fully flat beds measuring at least two metres. Adjustable partitions further improve personal space, positioning the product as Lufthansa’s most advanced Business Class offering on the A380 to date.

Beyond seating, the upgrade includes a new in-flight entertainment system across all cabins. Passengers can access content on 18-inch screens, connect personal headphones via Bluetooth, and use features such as a 3D moving map, flight cameras, and an updated interface with improved audio quality.

The retrofit of the first aircraft was completed in just under 12 weeks at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, where work has already begun on the next A380 in the programme. Alongside cabin upgrades, each aircraft is also undergoing routine maintenance.

Lufthansa plans to complete the modernisation of all eight A380s by mid-2027, as it continues to invest in its long-haul premium product and respond to growing demand for high-comfort travel experiences.
