Lufthansa and Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport have inaugurated a redesigned departure area at Terminal 1’s Gate A16, testing mobile passenger assistance, digital information displays and lounge-style seating.
The “Gate of the Future” replaces the conventional fixed service counter with staff carrying tablets. These mobile agents circulate among passengers to help with seat assignments, upgrades and rebooking, using a single interface to access boarding systems and manage gate announcements.
Large wall monitors and 360-degree displays provide departure times, boarding status, hand-luggage guidance and gate-change updates. QR codes give passengers access to digital self-service tools, including the Lufthansa app.
The waiting area also features sofas, artwork and individual work spaces designed to provide greater privacy and quieter surroundings.
Lufthansa and Fraport will assess the concept during normal operations before deciding which elements could be introduced at other gates. The partners aim to improve passenger comfort and make boarding processes more efficient, although no wider rollout timetable or quantified performance targets were announced.
