Lufthansa Airbus A380 diverts to Boston after running low on fuel mid-flight

Share

A Lufthansa Airbus A380 (registration D-AIMM) flying from Munich to Washington Dulles (IAD) as flight LH414 on June 30, 2025, was forced to divert to Boston Logan Airport due to fuel concerns caused by an unexpected air traffic control reroute.

The longer-than-planned route over the northeastern U.S. significantly cut into fuel reserves, prompting the pilot to warn, “That basically leaves us with zero fuel.” Lufthansa’s strict fuel safety rules required an immediate diversion when minimum reserves couldn’t be assured. However, it is strange that the flight diverted to Boston as it was already close to New Yok JFK, probably due to congestion or temporary airspace restrictions over the East Coast.

The plane landed safely in Boston, where ground crews had to adapt quickly to handle the unscheduled arrival. The continuation of flight LH414 to Washington IAD and the return flight to Munich (LH415) were both cancelled and passengers were rebooked. Flight LH 414 of 1 July was also cancelled.

The aircraft was ferried as flight LH9851 to Washington IAD on 1 July and operated flight LH415 back to Munidh.

This isn’t the first time Boston has served as a surprise stop — a United flight UA83 from Delhi to Newark similarly diverted there in December 2024 for low fuel.

Lufthansa has not said when the aircraft will resume regular service, but it’s expected back in operation soon, likely with a bit more fuel margin next time.
