Lufthansa’s historic flagship, the Lockheed L-1649A Super Star, has been fully repainted in its original 1950s livery at Münster/Osnabrück Airport, with 500 litres of special paint donated by Mankiewicz. The intricate design, including Lufthansa’s signature parabolas, was recreated using archival plans from Lufthansa Technik.
Next week, the aircraft will be transported to Frankfurt Airport, where it will become a centrepiece of Lufthansa’s new conference and visitor centre, opening spring 2026 alongside the iconic Junkers Ju 52, marking the 100th anniversary of the airline’s founding.
Introduced in 1957, the Super Star pioneered Lufthansa’s “Senator Class” on nonstop transatlantic flights to New York, representing the pinnacle of piston-engine air travel before the jet age.
