Lufthansa Group has ordered 20 additional long-haul aircraft, comprising ten Airbus A350-900 jets and ten Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme.
The order, approved by the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, has a combined list price of approximately 7.7 billion U.S. dollars. Deliveries are scheduled between 2032 and 2034.
According to Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, the investment reflects the group’s commitment to modernising its fleet, improving operational efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. The A350-900 and 787-9 are both next-generation twin-engine widebody aircraft known for lower fuel consumption, reduced noise levels and improved environmental performance compared with older long-haul jets.
The newly ordered aircraft will gradually replace less efficient older models beginning in 2032. Lufthansa said decisions regarding which airlines within the group and which hubs will receive the aircraft will be made later.
The airline group also highlighted operational benefits linked to fleet standardisation, including lower maintenance and operating costs, improved flexibility and greater efficiency in crew training and spare parts management.
With this latest purchase, Lufthansa Group now has 232 aircraft on order, including 107 next-generation long-haul aircraft.
