Lufthansa Group is expanding its Summer 2026 schedule with around 1,600 additional flights across its hubs, as demand for leisure and business travel remains strong despite geopolitical uncertainty.
The capacity increase is being driven by shifting travel patterns, with airlines reallocating resources—particularly from reduced Middle East operations—towards higher-demand markets.
Long-Haul Expansion to India
Lufthansa is strengthening its presence in India with additional frequencies:
- Chennai: +2 weekly flights
- Delhi: +2 weekly flights
- Hyderabad: +1 weekly flight
- Bangalore (from Munich): +1 weekly flight
Meanwhile, SWISS has already added seven weekly flights to Delhi, underlining strong demand on the Europe–India corridor.
European Network Growth
Within Europe, Lufthansa plans around 540 additional flights from its Frankfurt and Munich hubs between April and October:
- Expanded capacity to Southern Europe, including Spain, Italy and Greece
- Additional services to selected Northern European destinations
Other group airlines are also scaling up:
- Austrian Airlines: ~700 extra flights from Vienna
- SWISS: 100+ additional flights from Zurich
- Brussels Airlines: ~170 extra flights from Brussels
Flexible Capacity Strategy
The expansion reflects a dynamic capacity management approach, with Lufthansa Group:
- Redirecting aircraft from weaker markets
- Adjusting schedules in response to booking trends
- Preparing contingency plans, including route suspensions or fleet adjustments
While demand remains robust, the group cautioned that rising fuel costs and fare increases could influence travel patterns in the coming months.
Outlook
Despite a volatile geopolitical environment, Lufthansa Group is betting on sustained summer demand—particularly for leisure travel—while maintaining flexibility to rapidly adapt capacity as market conditions evolve.
