Lufthansa faces extended strike disruption as labour dispute escalates

Lufthansa is facing continued operational disruption as multiple unions extend strike action through the end of the week, intensifying pressure on the carrier during a sensitive period for the company.

The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit has called for additional strikes on Thursday and Friday, affecting outbound flights operated by Lufthansa and its regional subsidiary CityLine, as well as Eurowings. The union has proposed mediation in an effort to resolve the ongoing dispute, though the airline has rejected the offer.

The escalation follows action by the cabin crew union UFO, which has already initiated a separate strike impacting major hubs at Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport. The walkout is expected to result in widespread cancellations, with nearly 800 flights grounded in Munich and around 1,200 take-offs and landings affected in Frankfurt.

The strikes are part of broader negotiations over new collective bargaining agreements, with unions citing insufficient progress in talks. Lufthansa has indicated readiness to negotiate but remains at odds with labor representatives over key issues.

The disruption comes at a symbolic moment for the airline, as strike action has also impacted events marking Lufthansa’s 100th anniversary, underscoring the scale and visibility of the current dispute.

Passengers are being advised to expect further cancellations and delays, with uncertainty likely to persist unless a breakthrough in negotiations is reached.
