ITA Airways joins Star Alliance, expanding global connectivity

Share

ITA Airways has officially joined Star Alliance as its 26th member, completing a major integration milestone that significantly strengthens the alliance’s presence in Southern Europe.

The formal induction took place at Rome Fiumicino Airport, attended by senior executives including Joerg Eberhart and Theo Panagiotoulias.

Immediate Network Impact

From 1 April 2026, ITA Airways is fully integrated into the alliance network:

  • Access to 1,150+ global destinations
  • Contribution of 350+ daily flights
  • Strong hub presence at:
    • Rome Fiumicino Airport
    • Milan Linate Airport

This enhances connectivity across Italy while improving links between Southern Europe and intercontinental markets.

Customer Benefits

Passengers immediately gain access to core Star Alliance advantages:

  • Through check-in across member airlines
  • Reciprocal frequent flyer benefits (earn & redeem miles)
  • Global lounge access, including ITA lounges in Rome, Milan, and Catania
  • Priority services and improved baggage tracking

The integration is designed to deliver a seamless end-to-end journey, particularly for multi-carrier itineraries.

Lufthansa Group’s Strategic Role

The integration was led and mentored by Lufthansa Group, which now holds a 41% stake in ITA Airways.

According to Dieter Vranckx, ITA’s inclusion strengthens the group’s broader network strategy and enhances the joint value proposition across Europe and long-haul markets.

Strategic Significance

This move delivers multiple structural benefits:

  • Closes a geographic gap in Italy for Star Alliance
  • Reinforces Rome Fiumicino as a southern European hub
  • Enhances competition with rival alliances in the region
  • Elevates ITA Airways’ global reach and premium positioning

Bottom Line

ITA Airways’ entry into Star Alliance is a network multiplier event:

  • For the alliance: deeper penetration into Italy
  • For ITA: immediate global scale and integration
  • For passengers: materially improved connectivity and consistency

It marks a decisive step in ITA Airways’ evolution into a fully integrated global network carrier.
