Matthias Spohr has joined the Eurowings Executive Board as chief operating officer on 1 October 2026, succeeding Edi Wolfensberger, who will become chief executive of fellow Lufthansa Group airline Edelweiss.
The appointment marks a return to Eurowings, where Spohr served as head of flight operations and nominated person for flight operations from 2015 to 2021. Kownatzki highlighted his operational experience and familiarity with the airline and its employees.

At Lufthansa Aviation Training, which he led from 2021, his responsibilities included restructuring and relaunching the European Flight Academy and developing the group’s training activities.
Matthias Spohr, 56, is the younger brother of Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr, 59.
