  • The new flights are already available for booking
  • Tourism-oriented island with diverse nightlife and good weather
  • The island’s international airport has been renamed in honour or the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo

Eurowings continues the ongoing expansion of its attractive route offering heading south – from the end of October will operate flights out of Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn to Funchal in Madeira. The Portuguese island lies just 740 kilometres west of Morocco and north of the Canary Islands. Eurowings has included the route in the flight schedule, leaving Cologne/Bonn on Saturdays and Düsseldorf on Sundays. The airline will operate the route to Madeira with an Airbus A320.

The new flights can already be booked on the Internet at www.eurowings.com or via the Eurowings app.

Madeira sits in the Atlantic Ocean and the island’s capital thrives on tourism. There are countless hotels, restaurants and bars giving rise to a diverse nightlife in the city. Madeira has an excellent infrastructure and, in addition to the international airport, there are also ferry and flight connections to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo. Funchal itself has many attractions, such as the gothic-style cathedral in Sé or the tropical botanical gardens in Monte on the hillside overlooking Funchal. The city also has plenty to offer to guests with an interest in art and culture, such as the photography museum or the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte where the last Austrian Emperor Charles I is buried. The market hall is also well worth a visit. There you will find not only fruit, vegetables and fish on sale but also souvenirs and flowers. One of the must-do activities in Funchal is a downhill toboggan ride from Monte high above the city.

Funchal airport (FNC) was recently renamed in honour of the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. A bronze bust of the striker was unveiled at the renaming ceremony, resulting in global attention.
