Eurowings puts gourmet twist on classic currywurst with new in-flight offering

Eurowings is adding a distinctly German culinary icon to its onboard menu, partnering with renowned chef Tim Raue to launch a premium Currywurst in its Wings Bistro service from 1 May.

The move reflects a broader push by airlines to upgrade onboard food offerings, particularly in the competitive European leisure travel market. Eurowings’ latest addition reimagines the traditional street-food staple with a focus on quality and in-flight taste performance.

A classic adapted for 35,000 feet

Unlike standard ground-based recipes, the dish has been specifically developed to account for how taste perception changes at cruising altitude. Reduced cabin pressure and lower humidity can dull flavours, requiring stronger seasoning and more balanced profiles.

Raue’s version incorporates a tailored blend of spices, including Jaipur curry, combined with a fruity tomato base, onions and chili to maintain flavour intensity in the air. The aim is to preserve the signature balance of sweetness, acidity and heat that defines the Berlin-style Currywurst.

The sausage itself is sourced from Dönninghaus, a traditional butcher based in Bochum known for artisanal production.

Positioning and passenger appeal

The dish will be sold for €8.90 and offered on flights where hot meal service is available. According to the airline, the product is designed to resonate with passengers seeking familiar comfort food with a premium twist.

Eurowings says the initiative aligns with its broader strategy of offering “uncomplicated enjoyment” while elevating perceived quality—an increasingly important differentiator as low-cost and hybrid carriers compete on onboard experience.

Part of a wider airline trend

The launch highlights a growing trend across the aviation sector: collaboration with high-profile chefs to enhance brand identity and customer experience. By combining a well-known local dish with a celebrity chef’s influence, airlines aim to create memorable, marketable onboard products without significantly altering their cost base.

For Eurowings, the Currywurst is both a nod to German culinary culture and a strategic attempt to stand out in a crowded short- and medium-haul market—bringing a taste of Berlin to passengers cruising across Europe.
