Eurowings is expanding its base at Berlin Brandenburg Airport to eleven aircraft and more than 300 crew members for the upcoming winter season, reinforcing the Lufthansa Group’s position as the leading airline group in the German capital.

The expansion includes two additional aircraft, new routes and increased frequencies, with Eurowings aiming to become the largest airline at BER. The carrier already holds leading positions at Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart airports.

Among the new destinations is Bologna, which will receive nonstop service from Berlin for the first time with Eurowings. The airline is also strengthening its leisure network by adding more flights to the Canary Islands, including Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife. The new Bologna service and additional Canary Islands flights will be available for booking from 21 May, with more winter schedule announcements expected in July.

Since the pandemic, Eurowings has expanded rapidly in Berlin, growing from three based aircraft to eleven and building a network of nearly 50 destinations. Alongside Eurowings, other Lufthansa Group airlines serving Berlin include Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and SunExpress. Together, the group now accounts for around 30% of all flights at BER.

Eurowings CEO Max Kownatzki said Berlin remains a strategically important growth market thanks to its political, cultural and economic significance. However, he warned that sharply rising taxes, airport fees and fuel costs, combined with increasing EU regulatory burdens, are making Germany less competitive for airlines and threatening future investment in aviation growth.
