Baby boy born at 39,000 feet between Dakar and Brussels, his twin born at Las Palmas hospital

During the night of 22 and 23 November, a baby boy was born on a flight between Dakar and Brussels, but since his twin brother/sister was in a breech presentation the pilots decided to divert to Las Palmas.

During the night the purser made an announcement asking for a “doctor on board” because a pregnant passenger had severe abdominal pain. Doctor Koen Kussé was on board the Brussels Airlines (SN204) flight and assisted the flight attendants with the delivery. The baby boy, named Alex-Koen after the first names of the captain and the doctor, was born around 2:00, but the situation was more complex for the second baby. At 2:30 the Airbus A330 registered OO-SFM landed at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria where the mother was taken to the hospital for a caesarean section.

About 1 hour and 20 minutes later, the aircraft resumed its flight towards Brussels Airport. Spokeswoman Kim Daenen confirmed the birth to newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws and explained that the mother and her family are still staying in Las Palmas.
