Airbus and Lufthansa Group have celebrated the 50th anniversary of their partnership at the 2026 ILA Berlin Air Show, while announcing a series of new cooperation initiatives aimed at supporting fleet operations and sustainable aviation.

The relationship began in 1976 when Lufthansa became the first operator of the Airbus A300, the aircraft that launched Airbus into the commercial aviation market. Later this year, Airbus is expected to deliver its 700th aircraft to the Lufthansa Group, highlighting one of the largest and longest-standing airline-manufacturer partnerships in the industry.

Over the past five decades, Lufthansa has operated every major Airbus aircraft family, including the Airbus A220, Airbus A320 family, Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Airbus A350 and Airbus A380. The airline has also served as launch customer for several Airbus models, helping shape aircraft development and innovation.

As part of the new agreements, Lufthansa signed a comprehensive component services contract covering its entire A220 fleet. The arrangement is intended to improve maintenance support and operational efficiency for the aircraft across the group’s airlines.

The two companies also reaffirmed their commitment to more sustainable aviation. Among the technologies highlighted was Airbus’s SharkSkin surface coating for the A330, inspired by shark skin structures and designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, thereby lowering fuel consumption and emissions.

The announcement comes as Lufthansa continues to expand its Airbus fleet. The group recently finalised an order for ten additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, bringing its total A350 orders to 75, including future deliveries of the Airbus A350-1000.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Friedrich Merz, underscoring the strategic importance of the aerospace sector to Germany and Europe. The partnership remains a cornerstone of European aviation, combining aircraft manufacturing, airline operations, and sustainability initiatives as both companies prepare for the next phase of industry development.
