Loganair has named one of its newest ATR 72 aircraft after former chairman and long-serving executive Scott Grier, recognising his pivotal role in transforming the airline into the UK’s largest regional carrier.
Grier joined Loganair in 1976 as financial manager before becoming managing director in 1983. During his 36-year career, he led the airline through significant expansion, including a 1997 management buyout that secured its independence. Under his leadership, annual passenger numbers grew from around 50,000 to more than 527,000, while turnover increased from approximately £5 million to £72.6 million.
The naming ceremony took place at Glasgow Airport, where Loganair CEO Luke Farajallah described Grier as “a titan” of Scottish aviation whose contribution helped shape the country’s regional air transport network. The ATR 72 bearing his name will operate throughout Loganair’s network for years to come.
Grier said he was honoured by the recognition and reiterated his passion for Scottish aviation and encouraging young people to pursue careers in the industry.
After retiring as chairman in 2012, Grier became Loganair’s first president. He also established the Loganair-Baird Flying Scholarship to support aspiring pilots and authored a history of the airline, Loganair: A Scottish Survivor 1962–2012.
Today, Loganair operates more than 70 routes across over 35 destinations in the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands, employing more than 900 staff.
