On 29 October, a Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 (PK-LQP) from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang as flight JT610 and carrying 189 people, including crew, crashed into the sea off the island of Java shortly after take-off.
An official from Indonesia’s disaster agency tweeted that several pieces of wreckage were found in the waters off the coast of West Java.
The Indonesia Ministry of Transportation has confirmed the location of the crash site. Officials say that none of the 189 people on-board survived the crash.
The aircraft was only two months old and – according to Aviation24.be‘s statistics – the first Boeing 737 MAX crash.
Boeing issued a statement on the Lion Air’s crash: “The Boeing Company is deeply saddened by the loss of Flight JT 610. We express our concern for those on board, and extend heartfelt sympathies to their families and loved ones.
Boeing stands ready to provide technical assistance to the accident investigation. In accordance with international protocol, all inquiries about aviation accident investigations must be directed to the Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC).”
