KM Malta Airlines is seeking additional airport slots at Brussels Airport and London Gatwick Airport after a sharp rise in demand from Maltese voters abroad planning to return home for the May 30 general election.
The airline has already added extra flights on select dates, including late May and early June routes to and from both cities, and is exploring further capacity increases. Demand has been particularly strong from London and Brussels, with 763 passengers booking €90 return fares on the first day alone.
Despite these additions, many voters reported difficulty securing seats or contacting the airline, with some flights—especially around the early voting weekend—appearing fully booked. Political parties, including the Nationalist Party, have urged authorities to ensure all eligible voters abroad can travel, suggesting extending similar arrangements to other airlines.
The discounted fares are available only to registered voters listed by the Electoral Commission, with travel permitted between May 20 and June 3. Discussions are ongoing about potentially expanding access as demand continues to outstrip supply.
