A KM Malta Airlines flight from Rome Fiumicino to Malta was delayed by 46 minutes in late April after the on-duty pilot waited for off-duty colleague George Frank Mizzi, who was vacationing in Rome with his family. Mizzi, a former pilots’ union chief, personally contacted the pilot requesting the delay, citing a medical issue involving a family member.
An internal investigation found Mizzi breached company policy by requesting special travel arrangements and bypassing the airline’s operations team. He was disciplined with a three-month suspension of travel privileges and a formal caution. The flight’s pilot also received a warning.
The pilots’ union defended both individuals as “exemplary professionals,” arguing the delay was medically justified and cleared with operations. However, the airline emphasised that such conduct violates procedure and poses potential safety concerns.
