A KM Malta Airlines flight to Paris was forced to return shortly after departure when it was discovered that a trainee pilot was operating without a qualified instructor captain onboard.
Flight KM478 turned back around 30 minutes into the journey after the captain identified that the crew composition did not meet internal training requirements. The aircraft held near Sicily to burn fuel before safely returning to Malta International Airport.
The airline said the decision was precautionary and procedural, emphasising that:
The issue stemmed from the cadet being assigned to a regular captain instead of a training-qualified instructor, prompting the return.
KM Malta Airlines has launched an internal investigation to determine how the error occurred and to prevent a recurrence.
Bottom line: The incident highlights the importance of strict crew qualification rules in training operations, with the airline opting for a conservative, safety-first response despite no immediate risk to the flight.
