JetBlue has closed a defining chapter in its 25-year history, retiring the Embraer E190 with a commemorative flight between New York JFK and Boston—the same route that marked the aircraft’s debut in 2005.
Flight B6-190, captained by JetBlue Chief Operating Officer Warren Christie, mirrored the airline’s first E190 service nearly 20 years ago. Christie, who also piloted the inaugural flight, was joined by several original crewmembers and invited guests, underscoring the role the 100-seat jet played in shaping the carrier’s growth.
“The E190 was instrumental in our early years, delivering critical connectivity in short-haul markets and allowing us to expand in New York and Boston,” Christie said. JetBlue was the first airline worldwide to fly the type, using it to introduce millions of customers to its brand of low-cost but service-focused air travel.
The retirement coincides with a milestone for JetBlue’s future: the delivery of its 50th Airbus A220-300. The carrier has now received 52 of 100 A220s on order, moving toward a streamlined all-Airbus fleet alongside the A320 family.
Configured with 140 seats, JetBlue’s A220s feature wider cabins, extra-large windows, multiple charging ports, free high-speed Fly-Fi®, and seatback entertainment for every passenger. The aircraft’s lower fuel burn, longer range, and quiet operation have already begun to reshape JetBlue’s network and economics.
By phasing out the E190 and doubling down on the A220, JetBlue says it is aligning its fleet with both financial discipline and customer expectations, while positioning for further route expansion in the years ahead.
